Separated Parents Policy

Our focus is on the medical, psychological and emotional wellbeing of the children we see.
We always try to accommodate all family circumstances to the best of our capability. Please
help us to provide the best care for your child by providing all of the information about your
family situation at your first appointment with us. Conflict and breakdown of
communication within families can impact treatment outcomes for the child. The role of this
policy is to set clear expectations so that we can ensure that our priority is always the best
interests of the patient.

We expect that separated parents will work together respectfully and cooperatively
regarding the care of their child. All decisions regarding the medical treatment provided
should be made jointly if possible. If applicable, please provide us with copies of current
court orders.
Unless current court orders restrict a parent’s involvement in the medical care of the child,
either parent can:

  • Schedule an appointment for their child
  • Attend an appointment with their child
  • Request copies of correspondence regarding their child

If an appointment is booked, it is the responsibility of the parent who has scheduled the
appointment (not TNPC) to inform the other parent, invite them to attend and provide them
with feedback. Payment must be made on the day of the appointment by the attending
parent. It is then up to that parent to collect reimbursement from the other parent if
applicable.

TNPC reserves the right to request further information, including (but not limited to) court
orders or written consent, in situations where there is significant conflict between parents.
Services may be limited, or families may be discharged from our clinic if there is conflict
resulting in disruption to our staff or the ability to provide appropriate care to the patient.
Our clinic does not accept referrals where the sole reason for the referral is to gain
information or assessment for legal purposes relating to custody of a child.
